Did you know that while you're on a relaxing vacation, the genes that are typically required for dealing with stress, wound healing, and injury are down-regulated? That's right, you genetically alter when you are relaxing!
Among the genes studied that down-regulate or "lessen their effect on you" while you're vacationing were the MME and FOXO3 genes, both of which are referred to as stress-related genes. The study that showed this was believed to be the first documentation that a reduction in stress can decrease gene expression.
The researchers also identified what they referred to as a “meditation effect,” whereby they noticed that people who meditate on a regular basis were found to have a distinct network of genes with cellular functions that may be associated with anti-aging!
We know that the “vacation effect” can't be sustained throughout life because we can't go on vacations all of the time; but the “meditation effect” can be sustained if you’re practicing meditation regularly. Hmmmmm, I mean "Ommmmm" :)
